Devin Schmidt's First Team selection, three Delta State University men's basketball standouts were honored with All-Decade recognition by the Gulf South Conference on Tuesday, June 23.
Schmidt, the Gulf South Conference's all-time leading scorer with 2,594 points, is one of the most decorated players in the history of the GSC. Schmidt, who also finished his career with 713 rebounds and 512 assists,Â
The Sevierville, Tenn. native was the GSC's Freshman of the Year in 2013-14 and was an All-GSC First Team selection throughout his entire DSU career between 2013 and 2017. Schmidt also received GSC Player of the Year honors in 2015-16 and was the NCAA South Region Player of the Year in the same season.
Schmidt finished his career ranked third on the state of Mississippi's all-time scoring list and was also a two-time C-Spire Howell Trophy Finalist (2014-15 and 2016-17).Â
"Devin was an incredible player in our league," said Delta State head coach Miek Nienaber. "I had the perspective from the opposite sideline at CBU, but the numbers speak for themselves with what Devin accomplished."
"The most impressive part that sticks out is the way that he took over games," said Nienaber. "When DSU needed a basket or needed to make a play, everybody in the gym knew the ball was going to Devin. And more often than not, he delivered in those moments."
6-foot-7 forward Willie Readus also made the list as an Honorable Mention All-Decade performer. Readus, a Morton, Miss. native, was the GSC Player of the Year in 2013-14, helped the Statesmen to a 26-7 record, a GSC regular season title, and an appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16.Â
Readus was also a Daktronics All-South Region First Team selection, an NABC All-South Region player, and was named to both the GSC All-Tournament team and the NCAA South Region Tournament team.Â
Grenada, Miss. native Phil Turner also notched an Honorable Mention All-Decade nod for his 2010-2011 campaign for the Statesmen. Turner, who played in 23 games that season, averaged 18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.6 steals per game. Runer averaged 30.8 minutes that season for the Green and White, and added a 48.5 field goal percentage, a 39.3 percent clip from three-point territory, and shot 77 percent from the free throw line.Â
"Readus and Turner are two more deserving players of this list," said Nienaber. "Both guys came in and had great seasons for DSU. Readus came in and helped DSU win the league that year (2013-14), which was Devin's freshman season, and they went on to make a nice NCAA tournament run."
