BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Delta State University men's basketball player
Maalik Cartwright was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week in the west division as announced by the league on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Cartwright, a Holly Grove, Ark. native, averaged 22.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.5 blocks as the Statesmen split a pair of games against Christian Brothers University in Memphis.
In DSU's 78-65 win, Cartwright poured in 28 points and went a perfect 13-for-13 from the field, which tied the GSC record for the most field goals in a game without a miss. That 13-of-13 mark is also the best in the GSC since 2006-2007, when Henderson State's Dee Dee Drake and North Alabama's Esmir Guzonjic both went 13-for-13 in separate games.
Cartwright followed that performance up with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists in game two. To date, Cartwright ranks eighth in the GSC in scoring (16.5 points per game), fifth in rebounding (7.7 per game), second in field goal percentage (69.4 percent), eighth in assists (3.8 per game), fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3), first in blocked shots (12), and is second in minutes played (36.2 per game)
Delta State returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 2 as they travel to Clinton, Miss. to take on the Choctaws of Mississippi College.
