GSC TOP NEWCOMERS
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Delta State University women's basketball player
Zyaire Ewing was named a Preseason All-Gulf South Conference selection as announced by the league on Friday, Oct. 15.
Ewing comes off a 2020-21 season where she was named a WBCA Honorable Mention All-American and First Team All-GSC West. She played and started all 18 games for Delta State while averaging a double-double with 17.4 points per game and 13.9 rebounds per game. Ewing shot 44.7 percent from the floor and 70.1 percent from the free throw line. She had a career-high 31 points against Christian Brothers and pulled down a career-high 24 rebounds against West Alabama. Ewing scored in double figures in 15 of the 18 games and had double-digit rebounds in 16 of the 18 games. She ranked fifth in the Gulf South Conference in points per game (17.4), led the GSC in rebounds per game (13.9), and had the 8th best field goal percentage in the GSC (44.7 percent).
Moriah Hurst and
Ke'Vonshaye Stackhouse were also named to the GSC's list of Top Newcomers, and the Lady Statesmen were picked to finish fifth in the conference by the league's coaches.

Finished last season as the conference leader in field goal percentage (.641), which was fourth-best among Division II leaders … was fifth among in D2 and GSC leader in blocks (53), averaged a conference-best 2.1 blocks per game … also among the league leaders in per game scoring (6th/17.4) and rebounds per game (4th/10.6) … earned 2020-21 GSC West Player of the Year and First Team All-GSC West honors … NCAA Div. II South Region All-Tournament … D2CAA All-American Honorable Mention.
Kwajelin Farrar | Valdosta State – 6-1 / C / Gr. / Grovetown, Ga.
Led the team and was 10th among GSC leaders in per game scoring (14.2), thanks in part to 11 double-doubles that placed her 10th nationally and third in the league … had 214 rebounds, third-most among GSC leaders last season and 19th nationally … was also sixth among conference leaders boards per game (9.7) and third in blocks (23) and blocks per game (1.0) … garnered WBCA First Team All-America honors in 2021, as well as GSC East Division Player of the Year, GSC All-Tournament and NCAA Div. II South Region All-Tournament accolades.
Haley Schubert | Lee – 5-7 / G / Sr. / Knoxville, Tenn.
Averaged 18.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game last season … led the league in assists (110) and assists per game (4.8) … was second-overall in per game scoring and steals (52), while listed third among GSC leaders in total points (430) … recorded the third-most field goals made (157) and ninth-best conversion rate from the floor (.425), while completing 80-of-99 attempts from the line, for the fifth-best free throw percentage (.808) … garnered several awards last season including WBCA All-American Honorable Mention and All-GSC First Team East Division honors.

Averaged a double-double last season with 17.4 points and 13.9 rebounds per game, while converting 123-of-275 attempts from the field … paced the GSC in boards per game and defensive rebounds per game (9.2), while finishing second-overall in total rebounds (251) … was also among the conference's Top 10 in scoring (t-5th), field goal shooting (8th/.447) and blocks (t-10th/0.6) … picked various awards last season including WBCA All-American Honorable Mention and First Team All-GSC West Division honors.
Shanique Lucas | Union – 5-8 / G / Jr. / Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea
Led the conference last season in per game scoring (18.4), total points (459) and minutes played (857:35), while listed second-overall in free throw percentage (.778) and fifth in field goal percentage (.476) … had the third-most assists (99) among GSC leaders and fifth-best assist average (4.0) … ranked 18th on the Div. II chart and fourth among league leaders in total steals (51) … earned various awards last season including First Team All-GSC West Division, GSC Tournament Most Outstanding Player and GSC All-Tournament accolades.
