Union Outpaces Delta State in Fourth Quarter For Win

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University women's basketball team fell to Union University 78-62 on Friday evening at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Strong shooting from the Lady Bulldogs pushed them to the victory.

Zyaire Ewing led the way for the Lady Statesmen with 17 points and nine rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Shaniyah Buford hit the first Delta State three-pointer on the night to cap a short 4-0 run to give DSU an early lead. 
  • Ewing hit four straight free throws as part of the two teams exchanging the lead four times in four minutes.
  • In the second quarter, neither could made a bucket in the first two minutes.
  • After another Buford layup, the Lady Bulldogs went on a 8-0 run.
  • Alanna Smith sank a jumper for DSU and then Union went on another 10-0 run to lead 36-30 at halftime.
  • Union scored the first five points in the second half to push the lead out to 11 points.
  • Lady Statesmen went on 6-2 run to cut the lead down to seven points after jumpers from T'Krya Hicks.
  • Union pushed the lead out to 13 points before Delta State answered and cut the lead down to seven points at the end of the third quarter.
  • Two free throws by Ewing cut the lead down to six points, but then Jordan Little hit a three for Union to make it a nine point lead. After that, Union never led by fewer than nine points. 
  • Delta State did not have a field goal the last four and a half minutes of the contest.
TURNING POINT
  • Two separate long runs by Union to pull away in the second quarter. They outscored Delta State 20-8 in the second period.
