Lady Statesmen Complete Comeback to Defeat Union

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University women's basketball team erased a 12-point deficit to edge Union University 62-60 on Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Delta State and Union split the season series at 2-2

Kirstin Brown led the team with 14 points including 10 points in the third quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game was back and forth in the first quarter with the lead changing four times in the first five minutes.
  • Shanique Lucas scored six of the first seven points for Union.
  • T'Krya Hicks scored six of the first eight points for Delta State. 
  • Hicks and Brown each made shots to spark an eight-point run in the first quarter that gave the Lady Statesmen a 12-7 lead.
  • A 6-0 run by Union early in the second quarter put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 15-14.
  • Delta State went without scoring for the first four and a half minutes of the second quarter before Brown hit a jumper end the drought.
  • After Delta State held Union scoreless for three minutes, the Lady Bulldogs ended the half on a 8-0 run to hold a 25-18 at intermission.
  • In the third quarter, Jaelencia Williams converted a three-point play to extend the lead to 36-24 with 6:39 left.
  • Jordan Parker hit her first career 3-poitner to spark a 7-0 run that cut the deifict to 35-30.
  • DSU took their first free throw of the game with 2:05 left in the third quarter. 
  • Brown had two offensive rebounds and put-backs to boost a 6-0 run over the last 1:38 of the third quarter to tie the game at 43-43.
  • After a three from Salale Kepenc gave Union a 48-45 lead, Delta State went on a 7-0 to retake the lead. 
  • Hicks then hit a jumper to give Delta State a 59-58 advantage with 3:35 to go. 
  • The next shot for Delta State was a Shaniyah Buford three to extend the lead to four
  • DSU held Union to only two free throws over the last four and a half minutes of the contest.
  • Emily Beard's game-winning 3-point attempt missed the mark with three second as the Lady Statesmen held on for the 62-60 win.
TURNING POINT
  • Brown's two offensive put-backs and rebounds jump started the 6-0 run for the Green and White late in third quarter to tie the game. 
STAT OF THE GAME
  • Delta State had 13 second chance points and held Union to only two.
NOTABLES
  • Brown led the Delta State with 14 points and had eight rebounds
  • Shaniyah Buford followed with 13 points and added seven boards and five assists.
  • HIcks finished with 12 points five rebounds and six assists.
  • Ewing grabbed a hight 13 rebounds and recorded double digit rebounds in 13-of-15 games. 
  • Shanique Lucas scored 26 points with eight rebounds to lead the Union attack.
  • Williams followed Lucas with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Delta State had 18 assists to only seven turnovers on the afternoon.
  • Lady Statesmen held Union to 3-of-17 from beyond the arc with all 3-pointers coming in the second half.
