Statesmen Fall to Union In Series Finale

Cartwright scores 28 points to lead the Statesmen

JACKSON, TENN. -- Union (Tenn.) University outscored the Delta State University men's basketball 6-2 over the final 1:04 to post a 75-69 win on Saturday afternoon at the Fred Delay Gymnasium.
 
Maalik Cartwright led the Statesmen offensively with 28 points and had six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Union held an early 5-2 advantage before an Airen Brooks' 3-point play and a Maalik Cartwright jumper gave DSU a 7-5 lead 2:05 into the contest.
  • Union went on a 7-0 run to take a 13-9 lead on a Dusan Djordjevic layup with 14:06 showing on the first half clock.
  • The Bulldogs kept the lead between two and four points before Jaylen Lemons dialed up a 3-pointer to cut the UU advantage to 22-21 with 8:48 to go in the first half.
  • Justin Debuck made a jumper to stretch the UU lead to 30-24 at the six-minute mark and then took a 34-27 advantage following a pair of Jeremiah Littlepage free throws with 4:41 to go.
  • Brooks scored four points during a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 34-33 with 1:41 left in the first half.
  • Dubuck's two free throws with 1:19 left gave the Bulldogs a 36-33 halftime lead.
  • Djordjevic scored the first four points to stretch the lead to 40-33 less than one minute into the second half.
  • Delta State outscored Union 11-4 to whittle the deficit to 53-52 after a Cartwright layup with 9:12 remaining in the contest.
  • Kelen Dietrich's 3-pointer capped a 5-0 spurt to tie the game at 57-57 with just over seven minutes to go in the second half.
  • The game would be tied five times over the next 4:33 with Cartwright tying the game 65-65 with 2:47 to left in the contest.
