CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Despite a career-high scoring night for
T'Kyra Hicks, the Delta State University women's basketball team fell to the University of West Alabama 71-64 on Friday evening.
Poor shooting and turnovers led to the Lady Statesmen defeat to the Tigers. Hicks had a career-high 18 points and
Shaniyah Buford also added 18 points in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- DSU held UWA scoreless for three minutes in the first quarter but then scored back-to-back times before being held scoreless for the last two minutes of the quarter.
- Delta State didn't do much better in the first as DSU was 4-15 shooting in the first quarter.
- UWA went on a 9-2 run to start the second quarter led by two layups from Bria Dent.
- The Lady Statesmen then cut the lead down to six points at 20-14, but then UWA went on another 7-0 run and extended the lead to 27-14 with 2:51 left in the second quarter.
- The Green and White ended the second quarter on a 10-6 run to trail at the break 30-24
- At the end of the first half UWA was 3-4 from the free throw line and DSU was 1-5 from the charity stripe.
- To start the second half, the Tigers jumped out to a 35-24 lead on a couple of free throws from Naelyn Rios.
- In the third quarter, UWA went to the free throw line 11 times and made ten of them while DSU was 5-10 from the charity stripe.
- The two teams traded buckets and UWA led 50-40 at the end of the third quarter.
- The Tigers made it 56-44 before the Lady Statesmen went on a 17-9 run to cut it to 65-61 with 1:02 left in the game.
- But a turnover, foul, and a missed shot allowed UWA to hold on to the lead and take the win.
TURNING POINT
- After DSU made it a four point game, Naelyn Rios drew a foul for UWA. She hit the free throws and made it an six point game with 57 seconds left and UWA never looked back.
STAT OF THE GAME
- UWA was 20-for-25 from the free-throw line while DSU was 10-for-20.
NOTABLES
- Hicks had a career-high 18 points
- Ewing had a 11 rebounds for her 13th game with double digit rebounds.
