CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Zyaire Ewing dominated the game on Saturday as the Delta State University women's basketball team defeated the University of West Alabama 61-42 to clinch a spot in the Gulf South Conference tournament. The Lady Statesmen used a 12-2 run in the first quarter to pull ahead and never look back in the victory.
Zyaire Ewing had a career high 24 rebounds and 27 points to lead the Lady Statesmen. No other DSU player had more nine points in the win.
After the game, DSU honored their two seniors, Kaylyn Wilson and Kirstin Brown.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After, UWA scored four quick points, DSU went on a 12-2 run to take a 12-6 ball game with 4:41 left in the first quarter.
- Then DSU held UWA on another scoring drought to end the first quarter to hold a 19-10 lead after the first ten minutes.
- Ewing had 12 points after one quarter of play.
- UWA's Tasza Garrett-Hammit made two free throws early in the second quarter and then Tigers didn't score again for six more minutes.
- UWA only had four totals points in the second quarter. They were 1-13 from the field for 7.7 percent shooting. Their only field goal came at the 1:06 mark.
- Delta State outscored UWA 11-4 in the second quarter to lead 30-14 at the break.
- DSU once again held UWA scoreless for another three minute stretch while extending the lead out to 22 points.
- In the fourth, Shaniyah Buford and T'Kyra Hicks each hit a three point shot to keep the lead at 18 points.
- The Lady Statesmen pushed the lead out to 51-28 with six minutes to go in the game before the Tigers ended the contest on a 14-10 run.
