Lady Statesmen Sweep UAH Charger Chillout

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Brookelyn Sweeney stroke out 16 and tossed a complete game one hitter as the Delta State University softball team earned a 7-0 win over Miles, and the Lady Statesmen held on for a 9-8 win over Shorter University to close out the 2021 University of Alabama in Huntsville Charger Chillout. 

This was the first time in 10 years that the Lady Statesmen would earn a 4-0 sweep in the UAH Charger Chillout.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs Miles (GM1)
  • Delta State took an early 2-0 lead in the first thanks to a double by Taylor Picou and a groundout by Olivia Burns.
  • In the bottom of the fourth Sweeney homered to left center, scoring Julie Scheuermann to extend the lead 4-0.
  • The Lady Statesmen added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth with a single to left field by Hope Harbin. Haley Simpson then lined out to left to bring home the last run of the inning to make it 6-0.
  • Raegan Stafford added the last run of the game with a double to left field to seal the 7-0 win for the Lady Statesmen.  
ON THE MOUND vs. Miles (GM1)
  • Sweeney (1-0) pitched a complete game, striking out 16 of the 25 batters she faced.
  • Miles Zamiyah Williams (0-2) took the loss. She gave up seven runs off 11 hits in six innings of work. 
NOTABLES (GM1)
  • Taylor Picou, Reagan Stafford, and Kailyn Lofton had multi-hit games.
  • Sweeney stroke out 16 and tossed a complete game one-hitter.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Shorter (GM2)
  • Shorter was first to score after Kaylee Combs homered to left field as the Hawks took an early 2-0 lead.
  • Delta State took the lead in the bottom of the first 4-2. Jenny Griggers doubled to center to bring in the first pair of runs for the Green and White. Kailyn Lofton singled to left field to bring in the third run of the inning. Then, with the bases loaded, Katelyn Hayman walked home Lofton.
  • In the top of the third Sydney Poston would score to cut the Lady statesmen lead 4-3 on a sac-fly by Graham.
  • In the bottom of the third DSU scored five to extend their lead to 9-3. Haley Simpson reached on a fielder's choice which would bring across the first run of the inning. Followed by a sac-fly by Hayman to the center, Summer Cryder homered to left field to plate Simpson. To end the inning, Taylor Picou doubled to right field to score Reagan Stafford.
  • The Lady Hawks broke their scoring drought in the top of the sixth to make it 9-5. Combs doubled to center field to score two runs.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Lady Hawks would chop the Lady Statesmen lead down to one, 9-8, but the Lady Statesmen were able to hold on. 
ON THE MOUND vs. Shorter University (GM2)
  • Lacey Coats (3-1) got the win for DSU. She gave up three runs on three hits through four and a third innings.
  • Hannah Hasle came in to relieve Coats. Hasle gave up five runs on seven hits after two and two thirds innings of work.
  • Shorter's Julie Sanderlin (0-2) took the loss after giving up nine runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings.
NOTEABLES (GM2)
  • The only Lady Statesman to have a multi-hit games were Cryder (2-for-4) and Lofton (2-for-3)
  • This was the Lady Statesmen's first sweep of the UAH Chillout in 10 seasons, their best finish since 2015 when they left the Chillout with a record of 5-1.

Delta State softball is back in action on Friday Feb. 19th, 2021 against Mississippi College. Game one of the series will begin at 5 p.m. at the MC Softball Complex in Clinton, Miss.
