HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Despite a record-setting performance from
Kelen Dietrich, the Delta State University men's basketball team fell 106-102 in double overtime to the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The Chargers used a 9-0 run in the second overtime after the Statesmen had a 98-93 lead to pull to pull away for the win.
Dietrich hit 11 3-pointers in the loss to set a DSU single-game record for most threes. Originally held by Larry Walker, who made 10 three's against Auburn-Montgomery on February 13, 1997, Dietrich set the record while shooting 11-of-16 from three-point territory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Dietrich knocked down an early 3-pointer, to make the deficit 8-5 with 15:33 to play in the first half.
- UAH started running the floor quickly and pushed the lead to double digits midway through the first half.
- The Chargers then got hot from outside making 10 shots from beyond the arc in the first half to hold a 34-16 lead with eight minutes left before halftime.
- Then DSU woke up offensively and started to hit shots. A three-point barrage from Dietrich and Jaylyn Lemons capped a 13-2 run to make it a 49-42 UAH at the break.
- The Statesmen continued the hot shooting to start the second half, using a 10-2 run to take their first lead, 52-51, with 16 minutes left on the clock.
- Neither team led by more than six points the rest of regulation.
- UAH led 70-65 before DSU responded took an 84-78 on an Airen Brooks jumper with 2:39 left in the second half .
- Michael Motley scored a layup with 1:37 left in regulation to put the Statesmen up 86-81 only to see Chargers scored the last five points to force overtime.
- In the first overtime period, buckets from Motley and Lemons gave DSU a two point lead with 10 seconds left, but Max Shulman sank two free throws to force a second overtime.
- Early in the second overtime, Maalik Cartwright converted a 3-point play and Motley sank a jumper to give DSU a 98-93 lead at the 4:12 mark.
- However, the Chargers used a 9-0 run to take a 102-98 lead with 1:51 left in the game.
- Dietrich hit his 11th three-point shot with 22 seconds left to cut the gap to 105-102 but a Shulman free throw iced the game for UAH.
TURNING POINT
- The Statesmen used a 23-4 run that spanned that included a 13-2 run to end the first half and 10-2 run to start the second half to take a 52-51 at the 16 minute mark of the second half.
- The Chargers used a 9-0 run in the second overtime to take a 102-98 lead with 1:51 left in the game and held on for the win.
STAT OF THE GAME
- Dietrich hit 11 3-pointers to break Larry Walker's single game 3-pointers made record of 10 set against Auburn-Montgomery on February 13, 1997.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- This was the first overtime game against the Chargers since an 82-74 win in 2016. It was the third overtime against UAH all time.
- It was also the first 100-plus point game for the Statesmen since scoring 122 against Johnson University in 2015.
- The 102 points was the most scored against a Gulf South Conference opponent since 105 scored against Harding University in 2004.
- The 33 points were a career high for Dietrich in only his fourth game of his career.
- Motley followed Dietrich with 20 points and eight rebounds followed by Cartwright with 19 seven boards and five assists.
- It was also the fifth time Cartwright has scored 19 or more points in a game this season, and the fourth time he has shot 88 percent or better in a game this year.
- Brooks posted 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Lemons had 11 points, six assists and five rebounds.
- Shulman scored 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead six Chargers in double-figures while Kerney Lane also registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
