Lady Statesmen Drop First Game of Series to AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Delta State University softball team dropped the first game of the series to the Auburn University Montgomery on Saturday evening by a final score of 4-2. After the Warhawks scored three runs in the first inning and one in the second, they only managed to get one hit after that. 

The Lady Statesmen got the bases loaded in both the fourth and fifth innings, but only managed to scored two runs.

GAME 1 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Warhawks came out firing taking a 3-0 in the first inning. After an Abby Miller single and an Olivia Aycock walk, Mollie Cobb drove them both in with a single.
  • Next, Alli Kruger drove in Cobb and gave AUM a 3-0 lead.
  • In the second inning, Miller again got a single. Then after a stolen base and an error, Aycock drove her in for their fourth run. 
  • In the top of the fourth inning, Jenny Griggers led the inning off with a single. Then Karley Bloesch got a hit as well.
  • Hope Harbin punched a single and loaded the bases. While Haley Simpson was at the plate,  Griggers scored the first run for DSU on a wild pitch.
  • In the fifth inning, Raegan Stafford got on base to lead it off for the Green and White. Kailyn Lofton was then hit by a pitch. 
  • Griggers then hit her second single of the night. Karley Bloesch grounded out to first but brought in Stafford to make it 4-2.
  • DSU then had six straight ground outs in the sixth and seventh to end the game.

IN THE CIRCLE

  • Olivia Burns (5-8) got the start and took the loss for DSU. She went six innings and gave up four runs with three of those earned. She struck out two and walked four batters.
  • Bailie Barnes (9-2) got the start and earned the win for AUM. She went seven innings and gave up two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.

NOTABLES (GM1)

  • Griggers had two hits with a run scored.
  • Bloesch had two hits with an RBI.

The Lady Statesmen finish the series on Sunday, April 10 with two games against the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks. The first pitch at at 12 PM on Sunday afternoon.
