Falcons Sweep Lady Statesmen in Road Series

MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- The Delta State University softball team dropped the final game of the series 8-7 in a nail-biting eight inning affair. The Lady Statesmen held a 5-0 lead after the first inning but could not hold onto it.

GAME 3 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lady Statesmen capitalized on two errors by the Falcons in the top of the first to take a 5-0 lead. DSU's Summer Cryder scored on a error by Carlee Mullinax to start the scoring run for the Green and White.
  • Alyssa Gover's center field single scored Jenny Griggers. Haley Simpson singled down the right field line which scored Hope Harbin and Karley Bloesch.
  • To close out the top of the first, Gover scored on a throwing error by Hannah Carey.
  • Montevallo cut the Lady Statesmen lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the first. Kinley Adams scored off of a Sierra Easterwood SAC-fly. Brooke Ingram scored on another SAC-fly this time by Hannah Carey.
  • The Falcons tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second to cut DSU's lead to 5-4. Kinley Adams doubled to left center which scored Alexis Cortez to start the inning. A Lady Statesmen error allowed Holly LaForce to cross home plate.
  • The Lady Statesmen tacked on a run to extend the lead to 6-4. A single by Jenny Griggers and a throwing error by Cortez allowed Cryder to score.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Montevallo cut the lead 6-5. A SAC-fly by Ingram scored Adams.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Falcons gave DSU a free run after Mychael McMillan walked Lofton with bases loaded to score Gover making the game 7-5.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Carey hit a two-run home run scoring Easterwood to tie the game at 7-7.
  • Lady Statesmen and Montevallo could not score in sixth or seventh.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Adams singled to left field which scored LaForce to give Montevallo the 8-7 win.
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Olivia Burns (5-10) took the loss for DSU. She went five and two thirds inning giving up three hits and four runs while striking out four.
  • Jenny Griggers earned the start for the Lady Statesmen. Griggers went two innings giving up four hits and four runs and walking two.
  • Mychael McMillan (5-6) won the game for Montevallo. She went eight innings giving up 10 hits and allowed seven runs walking six and striking out two.
NOTABLES (GM3)
  • Gover went 2-for-3 from the plate.
  • Cryder, Griggers, and Harbin went 2-for-4 from the plate.
UP NEXT

The Lady Statesmen return to action in their last regular season series on Saturday, April 24 with a doubleheader against the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers. The first pitch at University Field will be at noon on Saturday afternoon.
