Lady Statesmen Split Their Season-Openers

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Lady Statesmen basketball team is 1-1 following this weekend's GSC/SIAC Crossover event at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Delta State played host to fellow conference member Mississippi College and the SIAC's Tuskegee and LeMoyne-Owen on Friday and Saturday as the four teams played four inter-conference games between themselves.

Delta State dropped their first game 69-49 to a very talented Tuskegee team on Friday night. The Lady Statesmen shot 40% from the field against the Golden Tigers and scored 28 of their 49 points in the paint. Tuskegee would go on to defeat Mississippi College 64-47 the following day.

Michelle Smith led the Lady Statesmen in scoring with 14 points against the Golden Tigers. Camryn Davis was the only other Lady Statesmen in double figures with 10 points to go with 4 rebounds.

Saturday saw a drastic change in the perceived attitude of the Lady Statesmen. The transition to a more intense style of play with an emphasis on driving to the rim allowed Delta state to pick up a 61-39 victory over LeMoyne-Owen.

Davis led all scorers in Saturday's game with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Her determination to get to the hoop also helped her get to the free throw line where she hit 11 of her 12 attempts in the game. Smith was also in double figures again with 13 points.
