Defense Pushes Lady Statesmen Past Shorter

ROME, Ga. -- The Lady Statesmen (6-8 overall, 5-5 GSC) held the Shorter Lady Hawks (1-11, 1-8) to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field in Delta State's 65-44 road win on Sunday afternoon. The defense was key in Sunday's win, but the Lady Statesmen also did a fine job sharing the wealth on offense, recording 14 assists as 9 different DSU players made their way to the score sheet.

Shorter scored the first two points of the game, but never again in a game that would see the Lady Statesmen lead by as many as 21 points. Delta State connected on 5 made three-pointers, but the Lady Statesmen mainly dominated down low as they outscored the Lady Hawks 40-26 in paint points.

Camryn Davis and Ginny Higginbotham were tied for the game-high point total with 16 each. Davis also hauled in 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Higginbotham reeled in two boards and made 4 of her 7 three-point attempts.

Alanna Smith was also in double-figures with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal. MaKenzie Hill had 7 points to go with 3 rebounds and 2 assists.
