Statesmen Use the Three-Ball to Conquer Choctaws Late

CLINTON, Miss. -- The Delta State University men's basketball team shot the three pointer with pinpoint precision, draining 13 of their 24 shots, including a dramatic Airen Brooks game-sealer with six seconds left, to hold off a resilient Mississippi College and complete the season sweep.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Following a back-and-forth first five minutes, DSU opened up a 23-12 first-half lead thanks to two Brooks and Kelen Dietrich three-pointers apiece.
  • MC stormed back to pull ahead 27-25 with 58 seconds left in the half, but Brooks knocked down a jumper to bring the Statesmen level at halftime.
  • DSU used the three-ball to spark a 13-4 push to start the second half and grabbed a 40-33 lead with 14:18 left to play.
  • Though the Choctaws cut the advantage to three shortly thereafter, Dietrich and Lee Cotton knocked down threes to put DSU ahead 51-41 at the 11:16 mark. 
  • MC continued to chip away and went on an 8-1 run over the next three minutes to get back to a 52-49 score.
  • A combination of free throws and points in the paint, including a Cotton steal and fastbreak layup, staked the Statesmen to a 58-51 advantage with five minutes left in the game.
  • The Choctaws refused to go away and orchestrated a 12-4 run to capture a 64-63 edge with 1:47 left to play.
  • Cotton came up clutch and drained both halves of a one-and-one to take the lead with 39 seconds to go, and Airen Brooks finished off the win with a highly-contested three-pointer from 30 feet.

Delta State heads north to Jackson, Tenn. on Thursday, Feb. 10 to take on first-place Union (Tenn.) University at the Fred DeLay Gymnasium in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
