No. 13 Diamond Statesmen Split Twin Bill at Arkansas Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. -- The No. 13/20 Delta State University baseball team captured an 11-1 run-rule win in game one before dropping a 5-4 decision in the night cap to split a doubleheader with Arkansas Tech University on Tuesday at Baswell Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 1
  • A three-run first and a two-run second helped the Statesmen sprint to a quick 5-0 lead.
  • Kirkland Trahan had an RBI double and scored on a wild pitch a Blayke Dendy singled in a run in the first. 
  • Hayden White and Trahan came through with RBI singles in the second. 
  • The lead grew to 10-0 with a five-run fifth inning. Carson Clowers smacked a two-run double and scored on wild pitch, and Hayden White belted a two-run home run.  
  • A Landon Lord RBI single got the Wonder Boys on the board, trailing 10-1 in the fifth. 
  • Hayden Cooper's RBI single in the top of the seventh gave the Statesmen an 11-1 lead. 
ON THE MOUND | GM 1
  • Landon Zizmann (7-1) allowed one hit over three scoreless innings pitched with two strikeouts to record the win. 
  • Evan Hafley (1-1) yielded five runs on six hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts to take loss for Tech.
  • Evan Bynum recorded four strikeouts and did not allow a hit in 2.0 scoreless innings to close the game. 
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2
  • A Clowers sac-fly with the bases loaded in the top of the second inning gave Delta State a 1-0 lead.
  • Carter Thessing hit a two-run home run, and Trace Maddux doubled a run home to highlight a five-run second to give ATU a 5-1 lead. 
  • The Statesmen scored one run in the third and fifth innings to cut the ATU lead to 5-3. 
  • Jake Barlow singled and scored on a Dendy ground out in the third and Barlow was hit by a pitch and scored on a Dendy in the fifth. 
  • Dendy scored on a Wyatt Pratt RBI ground out to get the Statesmen within 5-4 in the seventh. 
ON THE MOUND | GM 2
  • Cade Whitley (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in 1.1 innings pitched. 
  • Armando Romero (4-0) gave up a run on one hit and recorded a strikeout against two walks in 2.0 innings pitch to get the win. 
  • Ty Van Meter (5) worked 1.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts to get the save.
NOTABLES
  • White finished game one 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, two runs scored, a walk and was hit by a pitch. 
  • Trahan went 5-for-9 with three doubles, two RBI and a run scored in the doubleheader. Trahan was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored in game one and was 2-for-4 with two doubles in game two. 
  • Dendy went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in game two.

The Statesmen travel to the University of West Alabama for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday at Tartt Field in Livingston, Ala. The series starts with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, followed by single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
