Statesmen Storm Back to 12-5 Win, Sweep Union Series

JACKSON, Tenn. -- The Delta State University baseball team scored 11 unanswered runs to storm back from a 5-1 deficit to earn a 12-5 over Union University on Sunday at Fesmire Field.
 
Hayden White, Kirkland Trahan, and Hayden Cooper combined for nine RBI and three home runs to lead the comeback win.

  HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Kirkland Trahan got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to put the Statesmen ahead 1-0 in the top of the third. 
  • Union answered with three runs in the bottom of the third and two runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. 
  • Hayden White hit his second home run of the season in the fifth and drove a run home on a sac-fly in the sixth to cut the Union lead to 5-4. 
  • The Statesmen forged to a 12-5 lead with an eight-run seventh inning highlighted by a pair of two-run home runs by Hayden Cooper and Kirkland Trahan.
ON THE MOUND
  • Cooper Brune (1-1) allowed one hit with four strikeouts over 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of DSU starter Hammer Franks to pick up the win. 
  • Sam Poindexter (3-1) allowed three runs on a hit with two walks, two hit batters and 
NOTABLES
  • The Statesmen set season-highs for runs (40) home runs (7) and walks (21) in a series.
  • Statesmen hurlers recorded 13 strikeouts, posting double-figure strikeouts in a game for the ninth time. 
  • The 13 strikeouts eclipsed the season-high 12 recorded two times against Southern Indiana and a game one against Union.
  • Cooper finished 3-for-5 with a double and a home run to pace DSU's 13-hit attack.  
  • Cooper finished the three-game series 9-for-14 with 11 RBI, three doubles, and three home runs. 
  • White followed Cooper with a 2-for-4 performance that included four RBI and a home run.
  • Barlow was 2-for-4 with a double to take over the team's lead with 10 doubles. 
  • Trahan, Ragland, and Carson Clowers also had two-hit outings.
