Statesmen Drop NCAA South Regional Opener Against Rollins

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- No. 3 seed Rollins College scored a pair of unanswered runs to break a 5-5 tie en route to a 7-5 win over the Delta State University baseball team at the NCAA South Region 2 Baseball Tournament at Thomas B. Southard Stadium on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chad Ragland doubled and scored when on a ground out double play to give the Statesmen a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. 
  • Chase Achuff singled and scored on an Adams Torres double to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first. 
  • The Statesmen plated a pair of runs in the third inning to regain a 3-1 lead. Dalton Cummins doubled home Wyatt Pratt and Blayke Dendy came home on a Kade Dees RBI ground out. 
  • Rollins College used a four-run second to take a 5-3 lead. Cameron Meehan and Parker Coleman highlighted the inning with back-to-back homers followed by RBI doubles by Achuff and Torres. 
  • The Statesmen tied the game on run-scoring singles by Kirkland Trahan Dendy in the top of the third. 
  • A Torres sac-fly put the Tars in front 6-5 in the fourth and Meehan sac-fly pushed the lead to 7-5 in the seventh. 
ON THE MOUND 
  • Harrison Haley (10-2) gave up seven runs on 12 hits with a walk as the pitcher of record for the Statesmen. 
  • Jaylyn Whitehead (9-2) yielded five runs on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts to pick up the win. 
  • Austin Long (7) retired the Statesmen in order in the ninth to earn the save.
NOTABLES
  • The Statesmen extended their streak of games without a defensive error to eight.
  • White finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, and Cummins was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI as the only Statesmen with double-digit hits. 
  • Dendy, Trahan, and Dees drove in one run each for the Green and White
