CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Statesmen (5-11 overall, 4-9 GSC) hit 9 three-pointers and shot over 44 percent from the field in their 75-71 overtime win over the Union Bulldogs (10-7, 9-4) on Thursday night. Delta State got into position to win in the extra period thanks to 19 second-chance points on 12 offensive rebounds.
Points in the paint were a clear emphasis for both teams with Delta State only outscoring the Bulldogs 34-32 in the statistic. The Statesmen also out-rebounded the Bulldogs 35-25 due to the 10-board advantage for the statesmen in offensive rebounds.
Six Statesmen scored on Thursday night with 3 reaching double-figures.
Maalik Cartwright scored a game-high 28 points with 7 rebounds and 7 assists despite leaving the game at one point with a suspected ankle injury.
Caleb Allen scored 20 points with 6 made three-pointers and 2 steals.
Sam Smith recorded yet another double-double with 15 points and 14 boards.
Kelen Dietrich scored 8 points with a made three-pointer and 2 steals.
Jonathan Knight did not record any points, but hauled in 10 rebounds and 5 steals in the win.
