Statesmen Hit 12 Three-Pointers in Loss to Chargers

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The fina l games of the 2023 calendar year hold huge implications for the GSC standings as the Statesmen travel to Alabama-Huntsville and West Alabama this weekend.
Delta State started the important road trip on Friday night at UAH against a Charger team that also had just one conference loss coming into the game.
The Statesmen made 4 three-pointers in the first eight minutes of the game, thanks in large part to Kelen Dietrich making his first three attempts beyond the arc. Delta State went on a 9-2 run early to take a 19-11 lead before the 10-minute mark of the first half.
The teams traded buckets for the next few minutes, including the second three-point make for Caleb Allen before Derek Moore used a spin move to score off the glass and create a 30-17 Delta State lead.
Kelen Dietrich hit his fourth three-pointer of the first half at the 4:59 mark to give Delta State their largest lead of the game at 33-19. However, late turnovers helped fuel an 11-2 UAH run to make it a 35-30 Statesmen lead going into the halftime break.

The Chargers cut the DSU lead to one point three minutes into the second half.
UAH hit 2 three-pointers in the stretch before Dietrich made his fifth long-distance shot to push the lead back to 44-40. Keithean Brooks hit DSU's ninth three-pointer at the 14:44 mark to push the lead to 49-42, followed a few possessions later by Dietrich's sixth make beyond the arc to give DSU a 54-47 lead.
The Chargers answered with a long ball of their own, but were countered with the eleventh DSU three which was also the third by Caleb Allen. UAH used their defensive pressure to force a turnover, resulting in a lay-up on the other end to tie the game at 57 with 8:02 left.
Momentum stayed with the Chargers as they took a five-point advantage with three-and-a-half minutes left at 64-59. Chris Terrell picked a UAH pocket and found Maalik Cartwright in the paint to cut the deficit to three at 64-61 with 2:45 left.
A pair of free throws by UAH extended the lead back to five. The Chargers made another free throw before KB Brooks hit a DSU three-pointer to make it a three-point game at 67-64 with :43.2 left.
The Chargers took twenty seconds off the clock before hitting a lay-up to extend the lead back to five. Delta State missed a three-pointer on the other end before UAH made more free throws to make it a three-possession game, sealing the Charger win.
