Delta State Falls in Final Game Before Holiday Break

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Delta State traveled to Livingston, Alabama on Sunday for the final men's basketball game of the 2023 calendar year. The Statesmen looked to take a game from a West Alabama Tiger team that came into the game tied for first in the conference with a 5-1 GSC record.
The two teams appeared even early on as Delta State's five point lead was the largest for either team in the first ten minutes. There were three ties and two lead changes during that time as well.
West Alabama led 21-20 with just over six minutes left in the first half when Maalik Cartwright blocked a UWA layup attempt and scored on the other end to give DSU the lead back at 22-21. The Tigers answered with a three-pointer on the other end to regain the lead at 24-22.
UWA led 26-24 when Caleb Allen made a three-pointer off a Derek Moore assist to give Delta State a 27-26 lead. West Alabama made a bucket on the other end before Moore regained the Delta State lead at 29-28 with a layup under the bucket.
Keithean Brooks created a steal with the shot clock turned off and made one of his free throws after being fouled in transition. The Tigers made one more layup before the end of the half to tie the game at 30 going into the break.
The Statesmen shot 46 percent in the first half while holding UWA to 38 percent, but the Tigers were kept in the game with 14 points off of 13 offensive rebounds. The Tigers out-rebounded the Statesmen 22-14 in the first twenty minutes.

The Tigers started the second half with a 6-0 run and led 43-36 before DSU went on an 8-2 run of their own. Chris Terrell gave the Statesmen their first lead of the second half at the 12:15 mark with a three-pointer to put DSU up 49-47.
The teams were tied at 51 when Allen and Kelen Dietrich hit three-pointers to put Delta State up 57-51 with 8:20 left. UWA trimmed the DSU lead to one with under five minutes left in the game, but a Chris Terrell free throw make and an offensive rebound after he missed the second attempt allowed Samuel Whitmer to make a layup to give DSU a 62-58 lead with 4:48 left.
A free throw make and a jumper gave UWA the lead back at 63-62 with 3:35 left. West Alabama extended their lead to five before Allen made another three-pointer to make it a 69-67 UWA lead with 49 seconds left. However, West Alabama would make another bucket and two free throws down the stretch to clench the 73-67 win.
