Statesmen Drop First GSC Game of Season to West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Delta State University Men's Basketball team concluded their weekend road trip with a contest against the West Florida Argonauts on Sunday afternoon.
The Argos looked strong out of the gate, hitting seven of their first ten shots in the game as the Statesmen trailed 19-12 at the under-twelve-minute media timeout in the first half.
Kelen Dietrich hit a three-pointer with 10:24 left in the first half to cut the UWF lead to six at 23-17, but the Argos pushed the lead back to nine at 26-17 with a three-point play on their next possession.
The Argos led by as many as 15 with a 32-17 advantage just with just under 9 minutes left in the first half.
The two teams traded buckets and free throws for the remainder of the half, but two 7-0 DSU runs around the three-minute and one-minute marks helped cut it to a one-point UWF lead at 45-44 at the halftime break.
The Argonauts, who are at the bottom of the GSC in shooting percentage, shot an uncharacteristic .552 percent from the field in the first half.

The Argos scored first, but a Delta State 10-2 run helped give the Statesmen their first lead of the game, leading 45-49 at the first media timeout.
Delta State and West Florida continued to make shot after shot as the Argos cut the lead to two at 59-57 at the 11:18 mark.
A layup by Malik Cartwright at 9:33 gave the Statesmen a 66-59 lead, their largest lead of the game at the time.
UWF again cut that lead down to two, but a Bryce Clayton three-pointer at 7:46 pushed DSU's lead back up to 69-64.
Chris Terrell hit a long three-pointer just one possession before the under-eight-minute media timeout, which saw Delta State leading 72-68.
Back-to-back layups for UWF helped them regain the lead at 75-74 with 3:55 left in the game.
The Argonauts pushed the lead to six with less than two minutes left, but a Kolby Horace three-pointer cut the lead in half with 1:45 remaining at 84-81.
West Florida hit ten free throws in the last two minutes. Lee Cotton hit a three-pointer at the end of the quarter, but the Argos had fastened down to secure a 93-84 win.
