CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State was hot out of the gate against the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks, but AUM's play down the stretch made the game interesting in the second half.
The Statesmen led by as large as 22-6 in the early minutes and 35-17 by the end of the half after hitting 8 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes.
DSU made the Warhawks feel their 11 first half turnovers as the Statesmen scored 13 points off of those turnovers.
The Green & White also made the most of their 4 offensive rebounds in the first half with 9 second chance points.
The Statesmen scored the first four points of the second half to take their largest lead of the game at 39-17.
However, the Warhawks went on a massive 22-2 run after that to cut the DSU lead to two at 41-39 with 12:05 left in the game.
The teams traded another pair of buckets before
Caleb Allen hit a three to push the lead back to five at 46-41 with 10:36 left.
Kelen Dietrich hit a layup less than a minute later and
Chris Terrell's three-pointer on the next possession pushed the lead back to double-digits at 51-41 with 9:04 remaining.
The Warhawks had one last surge a few minutes later with a 10-0 run to cut it to a 63-60 DSU lead, but the Statesmen made all six of their free throws down the stretch in addition to a late three-pointer from Terrell to secure DSU's 72-60 win.
