CARROLLTON, Ga. – Delta State visited West Georgia on Wednesday night for another big GSC game. The Statesmen had a tough task ahead of them, looking for their first road win of the season against the 19th-ranked UWG Wolves.
The Statesmen lead the majority of the first half despite the Wolves shooting 46 percent to DSU's 34 percent. Delta State led by as many as seven points in the half, with a combination of factors going their way in the first twenty minutes.
The Statesmen hit four three-pointers in the half while also scoring 7 points off of 5 UWG turnovers. The Statesmen also received 11 points from their bench in the half, and only trailed by one in the rebounding margin at 20-19.
Delta State led 34-33 at the halftime break.
The Wolves returned to their formidable attack in the second half, hitting three three-pointers as DSU missed their first ten shots from beyond the arc in that time. The Wolves pushed their lead to as high as 12 points in the first ten minutes.
Delta State went on an 8-2 run to trail 66-60 with 6:12 left in the game before a 7-0 UWG run extended the lead back to 73-60. The Wolves later ended the game on a 13-2 run to seal the 86-65 win.
Maalik Cartwright led the Statesmen with 14 points on a 5-of-11 night. He also recorded 7 rebounds and 2 assists.
Kolby Horace was the only other Statesmen to reach double-figures with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Kolby also snagged two rebounds and two steals.
Kelen Dietrich hit 3 threes to record 9 points for the game. He also grabbed 3 rebounds.
