Statesmen Win Triple-Overtime Thriller at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Statesmen and Bulldogs came into Monday's game with both teams in the middle of a five-team log jam for GSC tournament seedings. Delta State and Union both came into the game with seven conference wins, as just two games separated fifth place from ninth.
Union started out strong out of the gate, hitting two early three-pointers as they took a 14-9 lead into the first media timeout. Delta State trailed 16-9 when a 13-5 run propelled them to a 22-21 advantage with 7:45 left in the first half.
The Statesmen led by as many as five at 29-24 with 5:29 left in the first half, but the Bulldogs kept fighting and regained the lead at 35-34 by the fourth media timeout. DSU held on to the lead and took a 36-35 advantage into the halftime break.
Delta State out-rebounded the Bulldogs 18-16 in the first half and scored 12 second-chance points off their 10 offensive rebounds. Chris Terrell was a big factor for the Statesmen in the first half, as he led both teams with six rebounds and two steals.

Union came out of the break with an 11-2 run to take a 46-38 lead into the first media timeout of the half. The Bulldogs continued their hot start and led by as many as nine, holding a 54-47 lead at the second media timeout with 11:55 left in the game.
Keithean Brooks played a big role in the second half, scoring nine straight points for the Statesmen as the Statesmen tried to trim the Bulldog lead. He later hit a three to give Delta State the lead at 61-57 with 9:17 left off a 16-3 DSU run.
Delta State extended their lead to ten, the largest for either team thanks to steals and timely rebounding.
Union forced Delta State to go to the free throw line down the stretch as the Bulldogs ended the half on a 9-1 run. Delta State led 78-76 when Union's Ahmad Johnson hit a layup to tie the game with one second remaining. Maalik Cartwright's half-court heave was unsuccessful at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime.

Caleb Allen started the overtime period with a three-pointer to put the Statesmen ahead. The teams traded the lead back and forth with big three-point makes, including one by Terrell to put DSU up 87-85 with 1:40 left in the overtime.
Cartwright came up with a huge block with 6.9 seconds left with DSU up by two, but the ball went back to Union when it went out of bounds. The Bulldogs found another clutch tip-in just before the horn, sending the game to double-overtime at 87-87.
Delta State started the second overtime with a 5-0 run on a Kolby Horace lay-up and Caleb Allen three-pointer. Union and Delta State continued to trade buckets as Derek Moore came away with a big rebound off a missed free throw tied at 93 with 21 seconds left.
Brooks found an open lane after the rebound and made a big lay-up to put DSU up 95-93 with 7 seconds left. However, Union made another big shot out of a timeout to send the game to triple-overtime tied at 95.
Kolby Horace once again started the third overtime with a big three-point make, but Union made a free throw and a bucket to tie the game at 98. Delta State led 102-98 when a Union three closed the lead back to one with 15 seconds left.
KB made his free throws to put DSU up three at 104-101. The Green & White defense forced a tough three-point attempt on the other end and corralled the rebound in to hold on and seal the win.

Keithean Brooks finished with a career-high 35 points to go with 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. Kolby Horace also had a big night with 19 points to go with 5 rebounds.
