Statesmen Use Strong Second Half to Defeat Argonauts

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Statesmen Basketball hosted West Florida on Saturday afternoon in yet another important conference game as the GSC tournament looms closer. The Statesmen were also looking to avenge a 93-84 loss to the Argos earlier this season in Pensacola.

The Argos took an early 11-4 lead before Kolby Horace hit back-to-back threes to cut the lead back down to one just before the first media timeout. UWF led 13-12 with 13:23 left in the first when Derek Moore converted a three-point play to give the Statesmen their first lead of the game at 15-13.
The teams traded buckets down the stretch until Kelen Dietrich converted a three-point play and Keithean Brooks hit a lay-up on the other side of the third media timeout to push DSU's lead to 30-21. West Florida went on a run to cut DSU's lead to two before Chris Terrell pushed the lead back to five with a three-pointer to make it a 35-30 Statesmen lead. Horace also hit a three to give DSU a 38-32 lead at the last media timeout of the first half.
Both teams combined for a stretch of 11 straight field goals just before the end of the half. Delta State 55 percent from the field in the first half and took a 46-41 advantage into the break.

The Green & White defense forced six turnovers in the first three-and-a-half minutes of the second half and used them to fuel an 8-0 run during that time. Delta State led 59-44 going into the first media timeout with 15:40 left.
The Argos followed with a 10-3 run to trail by eight with just 12:38 left in the game. Horace pushed the lead back to double-digits with a corner three-pointer off a Maalik Cartwright assist with 12:02 remaining.
The Statesmen continued to strengthen their offense down the stretch, taking their largest lead of the game at 77-58 with just under nine minutes left. The Statesmen shot 48.5 percent in the second half while forcing 13 turnovers and holding UWF to 42.4 percent.

Kolby Horace led the Statesmen in scoring with 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including 4 made threes. He also recorded 6 rebounds and an assist.
Maalik Cartwright and Kelen Dietrich recorded 18 points a piece. Maalik recorded 5 rebounds and 5 assists, while Dietrich made 2 threes and pulled in 2 boards.
