Lady Statesmen Hold Strong For Late Win Over West Florida

CLEVELAND, Miss. – DSU Women's Basketball welcomed the West Florida Lady Argonuats to Sillers Coliseum on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Statesmen looked to return to their winning ways. The Lady Statesmen were also seeking redemption after falling to the Lady Argos 59-49 earlier this season in Pensacola.

DSU trailed 6-4 early when a 7-0 run pushed them into an 11-6 lead at the first media timeout. UWF converted a three-point play with under a minute left in the first period to take a 17-16 lead, but Chelsea Hamilton created a turnover and made a free throw to tie the game at 17 at the end of the quarter.
Both offenses looked strong at the beginning of the second quarter, including matching threes to tie the game at 24 less than three minutes into the period. The defenses settled in after that, as the score remained tied at 24 at the media timeout. Delta State went on a 10-4 run after the media timeout, forcing West Florida to burn a timeout with 2:06 left in the half down 34-28. The Lady Statesmen shot 45.5 percent from the field in the quarter. Four free throws before the end of the second gave the Lady Statesmen a 40-28 lead into the halftime break.

West Florida used an 8-0 in the third to trim into the Delta State lead before a Hamilton three-pointer put DSU back up by double-digits at 47-36 with 3:10 left in the third. Hamilton hit another three to end another 6-0 run by the Lady Argos, putting DSU up 50-42 with 1:35 left in the third. AJ McCandlis found Hamilton all alone under the hoop just before the end of the quarter to put the Green & White up 52-45.
The defenses looked strong at the start of the fourth quarter, but DSU still managed to find a McCandlis three and a Grace Watson lay-up off an Elishia Wilson assist before the media timeout. Delta State led 57-51 with just over three minutes left when the Lady Argos hit a three to cut it to a one-possession game.
The Lady Argos hit a tough shot with 40 seconds left to trim the DSU lead to one at 57-56. The Lady Statesmen missed a shot on the other end, leading to a UWF timeout with eight seconds remaining in regulation. Sillers Coliseum erupted the Lady Statesmen defense denied two UWF shots to secure a Green & White win.

AJ McCandlis led the Lady Statesmen with 16 points, including 4 three-point makes. Chelsea Hamilton was just behind her with 14 points, hitting all 3 of her three-point shot attempts.
