CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University men's soccer program (3-4-7, 2-3-4 GSC) will look to make a final push for a playoff berth as they face the Warhawks from Auburn University at Montgomery Friday at 3:00 p.m. from Delta Field. The Statesmen will honor their senior class with a big match at 2:45 p.m. Sunday with the Falcons from the University of Montevallo.
The Statesmen are currently ranked tenth in the Gulf South Conference, but still have a shot to make the postseason as two points separate the sixth-place team and the tenth-place team in the Gulf South Conference Standings.
Scouting the Statesmen
- Delta State will enter the weekend with a 3-4-7 overall record and a 2-3-4 Gulf South Conference record. Last weekend, Delta State had a two-point weekend with a 0-0 tie against Lee and a 1-1 tie with Trevecca Nazarene. The seven ties are tied for the most of any team in NCAA Division II and is the most in program history.
- Ryan Thistle and Santiago Rossi both lead the Statesmen attack with six points on three goals this season. Rossi scored his third goal last Sunday in Delta State's 1-1 tie in Nashville against Trevecca Nazarene.
- The Statesmen defense is currently ranked fourth in the GSC as they allow only 1.29 goals per game. Junior goalkeeper Mason Baglio is currently tied for the most shutouts in the GSC with four this season. The New Orleans native got his fourth shutout last Friday against Lee.
Scouting the Warhawks.
- Auburn-Montgomery enters this weekend with a 7-2-5 overall record and a 5-2-2 record in conference play. The Warhawks are currently receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. AUM is currently tied for third with 17 points as the top five teams in the conference are separated by three points.
- AUM has one of the top goal scorers in the conference in Benjamin Hoffman. Hoffman is currently tied for sixth place in the GSC with six goals this season. Graduate defender Logan Roach is tied for fourth in the conference with five assists in the 2024 campaign.
- Tied with Delta State's Mason Baglio in the top of the conference is graduate goalkeeper William Blake with four shutouts on the season. Blake earned his fourth shutout last Sunday against Union.
Scouting the Falcons
- Montevallo enters the weekend in sixth place in the chaotic Gulf South Conference standings. The Falcons are ahead of the tenth place Statesmen by two points with a 6-6-2 overall record and a 4-5 conference record.
- Redshirt Freshman Cristobal Porter has made his presence on the attack for the Falcons. The Chile native has the most shots in the GSC with 53 and is tied for second in the conference with six assists in the 2024 season.
- Keeper Tomas Valles enters the weekend leading the GSC with 67 saves this season. The Chilean keeper holds a 5-5-2 overall record and three shutouts on the season, while allowing 1.83 goals per game.
