CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University women's basketball team (5-3, 1-1 GSC) will continue Gulf South Conference play this weekend at Walter Sillers Coliseum as they host the Falcons from the University of Montevallo Thursday Evening and will follow up with a meeting against the Warhawks from Auburn University at Montgomery Saturday afternoon.
Thursday evening's contest will tip off at 5:30 p.m. (CDT), while Saturday's contest will be at 2:00 p.m. During Saturday's contest, there will be a dedication of the Box-Muse Basketball Team Room. Dr. Muse and the family of William Box will be recognized on the Lloyd Clark Court of Sillers Coliseum between the men's and women's game.
Scouting the Lady Statesmen
- The Lady Statesmen currently hold a 5-3 overall record and a 1-1 Gulf South Conference mark after splitting their two road games last week. The Green and White fell to Union 85-59 but followed it up with a 57-51 gritty win over Christian Brothers Saturday afternoon.
- Junior transfer Olivia Allen has started to get it going on the offensive end for the Delta State Backcourt. Allen has averaged 11.5 points per game in the last four games for Delta State
- Against Christian Brothers, the Senior Class stepped up for DSU. Grace Watson, MaKenzie Hill, and Wakiryah Daniels were the three Lady Statesmen to reach double digits in the win. Hill had a career-high seven made free-throws in the win.
Scouting the Falcons
- Montevallo enters this weekend with a 4-3 overall record and a 2-0 GSC mark after completing at two-game sweep of Trevecca Nazarene and Lee last Thursday and Saturday in Montevallo. The Falcons defeated Lee Thursday 67-59 then beat Trevecca 57-40 on Saturday. Montevallo is currently on a three-game winning streak after starting 1-3.
- The Falcons have four players who score an average in the double digits, led by junior guard Isabel Grimes. Grimes has started all seven games and leads the Purple and Gold, averaging 12.9 points per game, shooting 42% from the field.
- Montevallo also relies on Sophomore guard Jordan Gillies. The Collierville, Tenn., native has seen the floor longer than anyone in the GSC as she averages the GSC leading 34.7 minutes per game. Gillies leads the Falcons, averaging 5.6 rebounds per game and 3.9 assists per game.
Scouting the Warhawks
- Auburn Montgomery enters this weekend with a 3-4 overall record and a 1-1 Gulf South Conference record after Splitting their conference opening weekend last Thursday and Saturday with an overtime win over Trevecca Nazarene and a lost against Lee.
- The Warhawks protect the rim very well as they are second in the Gulf South Conference averaging 3.71 blocked shots per game as a team. The Warhawks have 26 total blocked shots so far this season.
- AUM is led by senior guard Allasha Dudley. The Montgomery native enters this weekend as the third highest scorer in the conference as she averages 16.8 points per game. In the overtime win against Trevecca, Dudley scored her season high 27 points.
