Statesmen’s Late Surge Not Enough in 89-81 loss to Montevallo

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State Men's Basketball Team (5-4, 1-2 GSC) fell to the Falcons from the University of Montevallo 89-81 Thursday night at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

The Statesmen had two players with 20-plus point performances as senior point guard Chris Terrell led all scorers with 21 points and had three steals. Jesse Washington was the other player in the 20s as he knocked down a season high four threes.

The Green and White grabbed their biggest lead early in the first half as they pulled ahead 11-5 before the first media timeout. Terrell, Keithean Brooks and Sam Whitmer contributed to the 11-5 run as each knocked down shots from beyond the arch.

Delta State would maintain the lead until the 11-minute mark where Montevallo would take their first lead of the game with the score 15-14. The Falcons would go on a run to put themselves ahead 42-34 at the half.

DSU would bring themselves back within two possessions nine times in the second half, as Kolby Horace would knock down a three to make it 42-37 early in the second half.

After Montevallo would pull ahead to a 12-point lead, Delta State would battle back, as Whitmer, Terrell and Washington would make it a two-possession game again at the 15-minute mark.

A Brooks layup at the 11:11 mark would bring the Statesmen as close as a four-point deficit, but Montevallo would maintain the lead for the rest of the second half to closeout an 89-81 victory.

The Statesmen are back at home Saturday against the Warhawks from Auburn Montgomery at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Tip-off Saturday will be at 4:00 p.m. (CDT).
