LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Delta State University Women's Basketball Team (8-3, 4-1 GSC) never trailed in their 73-52 win against the Tigers from the University of West Alabama (0-9, 0-5 GSC) Thursday evening in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in Livingston.
The Lady Statesmen played a complete game as the Green and White had four players scoring in double figures as
Olivia Allen led all scorers with 18 points. In the front court, senior forwards
Grace Watson and
Dakiya Toney both had double-doubles. Watson had 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Toney scored 11 points and added 10 rebounds.
Delta State started the game off on a roll as they went on a 12-0 run as
Olivia Allen shot a perfect 2-2 from the field, knocking down two three pointers to score six of the 12 points.
The Lady Statesmen would make life difficult for West Alabama as they would force West Alabama to shoot 20% from the field as they took a 19-10 lead at the end of the quarter.
West Alabama would start the second quarter off strong bringing the score to 23-17 before the Lady Statesmen would answer with a 14-0 run as the Green and White would continue to make things difficult for West Alabama as they would force four turnovers and the Tigers went 0-3 from the field in the 4:30 span.
The Lady Statesmen would finish the half on the shoulders of senior point guard
MaKenzie Hill as they led 43-25 at the half. Hill was the second highest scoring Lady Statesmen adding 16 points on the evening.
West Alabama would start the second half with a 5-0 run but the Lady Statesmen would respond as two transition threes from
Madi Kate Vuncannon would help the Lady Statesmen lead 58-36 with 4:20 to go in the third quarter.
Delta State would take a 60-43 lead into the final frame where they would win the physical battle in the paint as the Green and White would out score UWA 40-28 in the paint extending their winning streak to four games.
Delta State will look to continue their win streak with a trip to Huntsville to take on the Chargers from the University of Alabama Huntsville, who defeated Mississippi College tonight 81-54, Saturday at 2:00 p.m., (CDT).
