JONESBORO, Ark. – The Delta State University Women's Basketball Team (8-4, 4-2 GSC) lost to the Red Wolves of Arkansas State University 68-45 Sunday afternoon in an exhibition in First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro.
Grace Watson led the Lady Statesmen as she neared a double-double performance scoring 10 points and pulling down nine rebounds. The Lady Statesmen out scored the Red Wolves 32-26 in the paint throughout the contest.
Delta State and Arkansas State would battle back-and-forth in the first quarter as there were two ties and a lead change. With 6:41 remaining a
MaKenzie Hill layup would give the green and white their first lead of the contest making it 4-3.
After Arkansas State would pull ahead to an 11-6 lead, a 5-0 run from the Lady Statesmen would tie the game up at 11 with 1:56 left in the opening quarter before ASU would take an 13-11 lead at the end of one.
Olivia Allen would tie the game up at 13 early in the second quarter. Allen would finish the game with eight points.
After trailing by 10 with 7:57 left, Delta State would battle back as
Ashten Martinez would make a layup to cut the Arkansas State lead to 25-24, concluding a 11-2 run. Arkansas State would take a 32-26 lead into the half.
The Delta State front court went to work in the third quarter scoring six of the eight points, four coming from Watson. Arkansas State took a 48-34 lead into the final quarter.
The Lady Statesmen brought the deficit down to 11 early in the fourth quarter as
Wakiryah Daniels would score the first three points from the free throw line to make it 48-37. Daniels would score five points in her return to her hometown.
Arkansas State would keep the lead to hold on to a 68-45 win.
The Lady Statesmen will return to Lloyd Clark Court in Walter Sillers Coliseum on Thursday, Jan. 2 to kick off the New Year against the Argonauts from the University of West Florida. That game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. (CDT).
