Lady Statesmen Rally In The Fourth to Defeat West Alabama

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Lady Statesmen were back at Sillers Coliseum Saturday afternoon to host West Alabama. The day was also a celebration of 50 years of Lady Statesmen Basketball as former players and coaches were welcomed back and honored throughout the game.

The Lady Statesmen led by as many as 5 in the first quarter, but were tied at 10 at the end of the frame after a 5-0 run by the Tigers. Both teams hit four field goals in the first quarter, with a made three-pointer for each side as well.
West Alabama shot 58.3 percent from the field in the second quarter to out-score DSU 16-9 and take a 26-19 lead into the halftime break. The Lady Statesmen forced 6 UWA turnovers in the first half.

The Tigers led by as many as nine in the third quarter, but the Lady Statesmen shot 40 percent from the field in the frame to cut into the Tiger lead. Delta State forced four more turnovers in the third quarter as UWA took a 39-33 lead into the final quarter.
The Lady Statesmen continued to cut into the lead in the fourth, with plays such as an and-one conversion by Martyna Czesick to cut the lead to one with 7:06 left. The Lady Statesmen tied the game at 43 with 5:49 left as Grace Watson also converted an and-one chance.
Delta State regained the lead at 48-47 on a Madi Kate Vuncannon three-pointer with 3:42 left. The Lady Statesmen shot 50 percent from the field in the fourth quarter, out-scoring UWA 24-12 in that time to secure a 57-51 victory. 

AJ McCandlis was tied for a game-high 14 points, including 2 made three's. She also recorded 5 rebounds and 2 assists.
Grace Watson was also in double-digits with 11 points on four made baskets. She also reeled in 6 rebounds and recorded an assist.
