CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Junior guard
Jesse Washington scored a season-high 22 points as the Delta State University Men's Basketball Team (6-11, 2-8 GSC) fell to the Flames from Lee University (6-7, 2-7 GSC) Sunday afternoon in Paul Dana Walker Arena at Lee University.
Washington and
Keithean Brooks scored over 20 points in the afternoon for the green and white. Brooks added 21 points shooting 4-8 from the field.
The Statesmen fell behind early on as Lee started the game with a 21-7 run.
After trailing by 14, Delta State would go on a 12-6 run to cut the lead to eight with seven minutes to go in the opening half. The run was fueled by
Chris Terrell, Brooks,
Kolby Horace and Washington,
The Flames would finish the half ahead 43-32. The Statesmen would shoot 41% from the field in the first half and 38% from beyond the arch.
In the second half, Delta State would try to get their deficit to single digits as Brooks would attack the Lee zone defense as he would get to the free throw line eight times in the second half. Brooks would go a perfect 12-12 from the charity stripe.
Delta State would take advantage of Lee's turnovers, outscoring the Flames 25-16 in the points off turnovers category. Terrell led the Statesmen with three steals in the contest.
The Statesmen will return to Lloyd Clark Court in Walter Sillers Coliseum next Saturday, Jan. 18, as they will host the Choctaws from Mississippi College. Tipoff next Saturday will be at 4:00 p.m., (CDT).
