Lady Statesmen Set for Two-Game Home Stretch with CBU and Union

CLEVELAND, Miss, - The Delta State University Women's Basketball Team (10-7, 6-5 GSC) Look to add on to last weekend's win over Mississippi College with a two-game home stretch this weekend against the buccaneers of Christan Brothers University and the Bulldogs from Union University. 

The Statesmen will face Christian brothers Thursday, Jan 23 evening at 7:30 p.m. (CDT) on Lloyd Clark Court in Walter Sillers Coliseum. Following that, DSU will face Union Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. (CDT) 

The Voice of the Statesmen Michael Gross will have the call on the Statesmen Sport Network and on the FloCollege network. 

The last time the Lady Statesmen faced Christian Brothers and Union, they went 1-1 with a 85-59 loss to Union followed by a 57-51 win against Christian Brothers to start GSC play in early December.

Scouting Lady Statesmen 

  • Delta State enters this weekend with a 10-7 overall record and a 6-5 record in GSC play. The green and white defeated Mississippi College 61-46 last Saturday in Walter Sillers Coliseum.  

  • Redshirt senior forward Dakiya Toney was a threat in the paint for the Lady Statesmen and a problem for the Choctaws and they had no answer for stopping her. Dakiya had day for herself with a career-high 17 rebounds, 10 points, three blocks, and two assists. 

  • Lady Statesmen Olivia Allen came off the bench and had a monstrous impact on the game on the offensive side of the ball for the Lady Statesmen with capitalizing on the fast break opportunities the Choctaws gave her and attacking at the rim. Olivia had 15 points, two steals and four rebounds. 

Scouting Lady Bucs 

  • Christian Brothers will enter this weekend looking for their first win of the season as they hold an 0-16 overall record and a 0-11 record in GSC play. Last time out, CBU fell at home to Lee 67-46 last Saturday in Canale Arena in Memphis. 

  • The Lady Bucs are led by graduate guard Jada Hood. The Saint Paul, Minn., native leads the Lady Bucs offense averaging 13.9 points per game, 3.3 assists per game, and 4.3 rebounds per game. Last week, Hood averaged 11 points per game in the two-game home stretch against Trevecca Nazarene and Lee. 

  • In the front court, CBU relies on forward Valencia McFall. McFall is one of the key players for the Lady Bucs averaging 9.3 points per game, 1.2 assists, and 3.7 Blocks per game. Last time against DSU, McFall had seven points and two rebounds for the red and black. 

Scouting the Lady Bulldogs 

  • Union enters this week on top of the Gulf South Conference with a 15-3 overall record and a 10-1 gulf south conference record. Last weekend, the Lady Bulldogs followed up their first conference loss with a 77-59 win over Trevecca Nazarene last Saturday. 

  • The Lady Bulldogs, play style involves Union playing ten players in every game so far this season. The Lady Bulldogs are led by sophomore guard Olivia Lee. Lee leads all scorers averaging 11.3 points per game. Olivia's sister Macey Lee leads the Lady Bulldogs on the defensive end with 37 steals this season. 

  • Last time against Delta State, grad-transfer Alexis Callins led the way for Union with 17 points, as she shot 3-5 from beyond the arc. Callins was one of seven different Lady Bulldogs with two steals in the win.
