CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State Men's Basketball Team (8-10, 4-8 GSC) scored 50 second half points in an 87-69 win over the Buccaneers of Christian Brothers (7-11, 3-9 GSC) Thursday evening on Lloyd Clark Court in Walter Sillers Coliseum.
The Statesmen added on to their season turnover margin as the green and white forced 23 turnovers on the defensive end while only having six giveaways. The Statesmen were aggresive on the offensive glass as they outscored CBU 24-13 on second chance opportunities.
Senior guard
Keithean Brooks led all scorers with 32 points in the winning efforts. Brooks was aggressive on the offensive end, attacking the rim and going 15-16 from the free-throw line.
Both teams would exchange the lead four times in the first half before an 8-2 Delta State run would have the Statesmen heading into the break with a 37-31 lead.
Je'Marion Westbrook was the second Statesmen along with Brooks in double figures as the Marianna, Ark., native scored 10 in the first half.
CBU would open the second half with a 7-0 run to re-gain the lead at 38-37.
Jesse Washington would respond for the green and white with a 4-0 run of his own for DSU. Washington added 12 points with five rebounds.
Following the Washington 4-0 run, the Statesmen would never trail for the rest of the game, but CBU would tie the game up at 54 with 9:30 remaining.
Delta State would pull ahead behind their senior point guard
Chris Terrell as he would ignite a DSU 17-9 run in a four-minute span. Terrell would score 21 points and added five steals on the defensive end.
Sillers Coliseum would erupt as the Statesmen pressure would lead to back-to-back threes from Terrell adding on a 8-0 run in the final 1:30 to finish the 87- 69 win.
The Statesmen are back in Walter Sillers Coliseum to finish their two-game homestretch with the Bulldogs from Union University this Saturday at 4:00 p.m., (CDT)
