NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Senior forward
Dakiya Toney notched her second career double-double in the Delta State University Women's Basketball team's 62-51 win over Trevecca Nazarene University Thursday afternoon in the Trojan Field House in Nashville.
The Lake Village Ark., native cleaned the glass for the green and white as she had a team and season high 14 rebounds to add on to her 12 points.
The Lady Statesmen and Trojans exchanged runs early on before a 17-3 run by the Lady Statesmen gave the green and white a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Olivia Allen and
Martyna Czescik added four points in the early frame as the green and white dominated the paint out scoring Trevecca 10-2 in the opening frame. Czescik scored a season high 10 points in the win.
Early in the second quarter, Toney would start to fill the stat sheet as she added a steal, an assist, and a block to her double-double performance helping Delta State maintain their lead at 28-22 into the half. Tony and
Madi Kate Vuncannon led all scorers with six points at the half.
The Trojans would start the third quarter strong gaining the lead for the first time since the first quarter, but the Lady Statesmen would get a 5-0 run from Czescik and Allen to finish the quarter ahead 45-39.
Wakiryah Daniels would be the spark plug for the Lady Statesmen as she added eight points in the quarter.
Delta State would add 10 more points to the 5-0 run at the end of the third quarter as the green and white would stretch their lead to 15 early in the fourth quarter and hold on as Toney and Daniels would lead the way both finishing the night with 12 points.
The Lady Statesmen (9-6, 5-4 GSC) will travel to Cleveland, Tenn., to take on the Flames of Lee University Saturday at 2:00 p.m., (CDT). The Flames defeated Mississippi College 72-46 this afternoon.
