Clayton Posts Career High Against the Boll Weevils

MONTICELLO, Ark. — The Delta State University Men's Basketball team delivered one of its strongest opening halves of the season on Tuesday night, building a double-digit lead behind elite three-point shooting, but the Statesmen ultimately fell 75–69 to Arkansas–Monticello at Steelman Fieldhouse.

Delta State (2–2) set the tone early, knocking down seven first-half threes and shooting 52 percent over the opening 20 minutes. The Statesmen led by as many as 16 points and carried a 40–29 advantage into the locker room after controlling the pace on both ends of the floor.

Bryce Clayton powered the offense, finishing with a career-high 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc as he repeatedly found space against the Boll Weevils' perimeter defense. Elisha Puckett added 17 points and four rebounds, providing steady scoring and second-chance opportunities. Senior guard Samuel Whitmer continued his efficient play with 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds, serving as one of DSU's most reliable two-way contributors.

Delta State's depth offered another boost throughout the night. Brendan Braddix posted five points and an important first-half three. Jackson Twombly added five points and three assists, while Je'Marion Westbrook matched him with five points and five boards. DaCory Porter chipped in five rebounds and two assists, and Phillip Hughes supplied an early spark with a strong finish at the rim.

The Statesmen hit 11 triples and committed just eight turnovers, marking one of their most efficient offensive performances through four games. Arkansas–Monticello countered with a hot shooting second half, using an 18-of-26 stretch from the field to climb back into the contest.

Delta State now returns home to Walter Sillers Coliseum to continue non-conference play Saturday against the Tigers from Ouachita Baptist University. Tip off will be at 3:00 p.m. (CT).
