Statesmen Extend Winning Streak to Five with 90-85 win against Montevallo

Four Statesmen Score 15 or more in the win

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Delta State University Men's Basketball Team (11-10, 7-8 GSC) pick up a huge 90-85 road win against the Falcons from the University of Montevallo (13-8, 9-6 GSC) Saturday afternoon in Central State Bank Arena.
 
The Statesmen took advantage turning over the Falcons 19 time scoring 21 points from those turnovers. Senior point guard Chris Terrell led the way on the offensive end with 20 points, four assists and three steals.
 
After exchanging blows in the first five minutes, Delta State would burst out a 10-3 run behind the duo of Terrell and Kolby Horace. Horace scored 16 points and led the team with five steals.
 
After the Falcons answered back to tie the game up at 22, both teams would exchange buckets up to the under eight timeout where both teams were tied at 28. A Je'Marion Westbrook dunk would ignite a Statesmen 12-5 run to put the green and white up 40-33 with under four minutes to go.
 
Keithean Brooks would add on to his 15-point night as he scored four of the five points for Delta State to push the Statesmen out to a 45-40 halftime lead.
 
 Montevallo would start the second half strong taking a 53-52 lead with 16:02 remaining. But it wouldn't be too long as a Westbrook layup would give DSU the lead back as they never trailed for the remaining of the game.
 
With 10:57 remaining, Terrell would knock in a layup to give DSU their biggest lead in the second half at 65-57.
 
As the Falcons would work their way back to a two-point deficit, the Statesmen would make two defensive plays with under two minutes to go. Jesse Washington would take a charge with 1:48 to keep Delta State ahead 82-80. On the next possession, Horace would drive and kick to an open Sam Whitmer, who knocked down a three to make it 85-80.
 
With the score at 85-82 with under 30 seconds to go, Terrell would block a three-to-tie leading to a layup with a foul. Terrell would knock down the free throw to make it 88-82.
 
The Falcons would not go away, answering with a three ball to make it 88-85. On the following possession, Terrell would knock down two more free throws to put the nail in the coffin as the Statesmen win 90-85.
 
Delta State will welcome top ten ranked Chargers from Alabama Huntsville to town Thursday night. That game will tipoff at approximately 7:30 p.m., (CDT).
