CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University men's basketball team (11-11, 7-9 GSC) snapped its win streak on Thursday night, falling 80-74 to No. 4 Alabama Huntsville (21-1, 16-0 GSC) at Sillers Coliseum.
The first half featured four lead changes and four ties. Three-pointers from
Je'Marion Westbrook and
Keithean Brooks in the opening five minutes proved crucial for the Statesmen offense.
Delta State reclaimed the lead, 20-18, at the 10:01 mark on a
Chris Terrell layup. The Chargers led by as many as seven in the first half, but the Statesmen cut the lead to five, trailing 35-30 going into the locker room at halftime.
UAH took its largest lead of the night, 53-37, at the 12:52 mark in the second half, but Delta State slowly started chipping away at the deficit. Terrell, Westbrook, and
Kolby Horace hit four three-pointers in consecutive possessions, cutting the lead to 58-53 with 8:45 remaining in the contest.
Terrell's three-pointer at the 1:57 mark notched the score at 73-70, but the Chargers offense persevered, defeating DSU 80-74 and extending its win streak to 21 games.
Three-pointers kept Delta State in the game, as the Statesmen shot 15-for-32 from long range compared to Huntsville's 5-for-18, but the Chargers' inside game proved pivotal, outscoring the Statesmen 56-20 in points in the paint.
Three Statesmen scored in double figures: Terrell (23), Brooks (20), and Westbrook's season-high 18 points. Terrell has now scored 20 or more points in 14 games this season.
The Statesmen return to action on Saturday, Feb. 8, as they take on West Alabama. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Sillers Coliseum.
