Lady Statesmen Suffer Last Second Loss to Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Delta State University Women's Basketball Team (11-10, 7-8 GSC) lost to the Falcons of Montevallo (9-11, 7-8 GSC) 50-48 Saturday afternoon in Central State Bank Arena in Montevallo.
 
In a game with seven ties and three lead changes, the Lady Statesmen out scored the Falcons 32-10 in the paint. Wakiryah Daniels led all Delta State scorers with 12 points. The Jonesboro native pulled down six rebounds and had two steals.
 
Daniels struck early for DSU as she scored six of the Lady Statesmen's first ten points as DSU pushed out to a 10-7 lead with 4:42 left in the opening frame.
 
Montevallo would finish the quarter with a 9-1 run to take a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
After trailing 22-13, the Lady Statesmen would go on a 11-2 run as Dakiya Toney would add six points in the paint during the run. Toney would finish the night scoring 11 points. The Falcons would finish the first half ahead 34-30.
 
The Lady Statesmen would stay within two possessions in the third quarter before a Madi Kate Vuncannon three ball would cut the Falcon lead to 41-39 after the third quarter.
 
Three of the seven ties would happen in the fourth as Delta State would add the third tie with 30 seconds left on a MaKenzie Hill layup tying the game up at 48. But Montevallo would take the lead with .9 seconds on a shooting foul to end the game.
 
The Lady Statesmen are back at home on Thursday evening as they welcome the Chargers from Alabama Huntsville to the Sillers Coliseum. Tipoff Thursday will be at 5:30 p.m. (CDT).
