VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Delta State University Men's Basketball team (13-11, 9-9 GSC) went to The Complex in Valdosta State University and knocked off the no. 6 ranked Blazers from Valdosta State 96-92 Thursday night.
Keithean Brooks,
Kolby Horace and
Jesse Washington all had 20-plus point performances for the green and white as Delta State shot 60% from the field in a fast-paced contest that had nine ties and 16 lead changes.
Washington got things started on the offensive end of the ball knocking down back-to-back three pointers as he helped pushed DSU go back-and-forth with the Blazers during the first five minutes of the half. Washington finished the night with 22 points and a team-high two steals.
At the midway point of the first half, Delta State would have the biggest lead of the half with a 24-17 lead behind Brooks and Washington. Brooks would score 15 points in the first half shooting 6-7 from the field.
Trailing 42-38, Delta State will get a quick 4-0 run in 27 seconds from Brooks and Terrell to tie the game up 42-42 at the half.
Early in the second half, Delta State would go on a 18-6 run behind Horace, Brooks and
Je'Marion Westbrook to grab their biggest lead at 69-58 with 12:16 remaining in the game. Westbrook would get a four-point play giving DSU an 11-point lead. Horace scored 20 points and led the Statesmen with seven rebounds.
The Statesmen trio of
Chris Terrell, Brooks and Washington kept Delta State ahead for the remaining 5:20 after trailing 80-78.
With Delta State up 95-92 with 23 seconds remaining, Terrell would grab a huge offensive rebound off a missed Brooks free throw to keep the possession with DSU. After the rebound, Terrell's pass got poked loose into the hands of Brooks who got fouled and put the game away by hitting a free throw, making it 96-92.
The Statesmen will travel to Pensacola to take on the Argonauts from the University of West Florida, who fell to Mississippi College 70-67 tonight. Tip off will start at approximately 4:00 p.m., (CDT).
