Statesmen Finish Road Trip with Win at West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The senior guard duo of Keithean Brooks and Chris Terrell scored in the 20s as the Delta State University Men's Basketball Team (14-11, 10-9 GSC) defeated the Argonauts from the University of West Florida 89-86 Saturday afternoon at the UWF Field House in Pensacola.

 

Brooks scored 28 points with six assists and five steals, while Terrell scored 24 points, four rebounds and four steals.

 

Delta State started the game on a 10-1 run scoring on four of five straight possessions with two three pointers from Terrell and Je'Marion Westbrook. Westbrook scored nine points shooting 50% from the field.

 

The Argonauts would battle back throughout the first half as they would manage to take a 26-25 lead with 8:00 remaining in the first half.

 

From then, Brooks would score 10 points in the final eight minutes of the first half including an assist to a Sam Whitmer three pointer beating the halftime buzzer to conclude a 6-0 run in the final 1:20. Delta State led 44-37 at the halftime break.

 

The Statesmen pressure would keep momentum to start the second half as Delta State would push out to their largest lead at 54-42 with 17:12 remaining. During the early 12-5 run in the second half, Terrell would have two steals and a dunk to give DSU their largest lead.

 

West Florida would make it a one possession game at 62-61 with 10 minutes to go. Brooks would answer the run with a huge three to keep Delta State in front.

 

The senior leadership of Brooks and Terrell would score 15 of the final Delta State 19 points to keep Delta State ahead as they never trailed in the second half.

The win will put Delta State a game behind fourth place in the GSC with the top four teams in the conference will host a first-round game in the Truist GSC Championship Tournament in March.

 

Delta State will have their final two home games of the regular season next week as they welcome the Flames from Lee to town this upcoming Thursday. The tip-off will be set for approximately 7:30 p.m. (CDT)
