Lady Statesmen Hit the Road to Face Valdosta State and West Florida

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Women's Basketball Team (12-11, 8-9 GSC) will leave the Magnolia State for the final time in the 2024-25 regular season with a two-game road trip facing Valdosta State University and the University of West Florida.
 
The Lady Statesmen will start their road trip to face the Lady Blazers this afternoon at 5:00 p.m. (CDT) in The Complex on the campus of Valdosta State. Delta State will follow that up with a trip to Pensacola, Fla., to take on the Argonauts of West Florida Saturday at 2:00 p.m. (CDT).
 
The Voice of the Statesmen Michael Gross will have the call on the Statesmen Sports Network and both Valdosta State and West Florida will provide the game on the FloCollege Network.
 
Scouting the Lady Statesmen
  • Delta State enters this weekend in a three-way tie for seventh in the Gulf South Conference with a 12-11 overall record and an 8-9 record in GSC play. Last week DSU split the two-game home stretch with a 56-50 loss to the Chargers of Alabama Huntsville and a 74-58 win against the Tigers from West Alabama.
  • Last week, the backcourt duo of MaKenzie Hill and Wakiryah Daniels got it going on the offensive end for the green and white. On her birthday, Hill led all scorers with 16 points against the Chargers as she averaged 15.5 points per game along with 2.5 steals per game in the two-game stretch. Daniels led all scorers with 16 in Saturday's win against UWA. The Jonesboro, Ark., native averaged 13.5 points per game last week. Against the Argonauts in early January, Daniels led all Lady Statesmen scorers with 18 points as she shot 50% from the field.
  • Senior forward Grace Watson had a good weekend the last time DSU faced West Florida and Valdosta State. The Hazel Green, Ala., native posted one of her six double-double performances against the Lady Blazers in early January.
Scouting the Lady Blazers
  • Valdosta State enters this weekend a half game ahead of the Lady Statesmen in the GSC standings. The last time VSU and DSU faced, Valdosta State won in overtime at the buzzer. Last week, the Lady Blazers split their two-game road trip defeating Trevecca Nazarene 49-40 but falling to Lee 59-44.
  • Valdosta State's frontcourt is led by Kiersten Nelson. The New Orleans native leads all VSU scorers averaging 14.3 points per game and has a team high 11 blocks this season. Nelson scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds against DSU in early January.
  • The VSU backcourt is led by junior guard Aryana Hicks and Erin Whalen. Hicks is currently averaging 11.0 points per game while dishing out 4.7 assists per game. Whalen averages 10.3 points per game and leads the Lady Blazers averaging 8.3 rebounds per game.
Scouting the Argonauts
  • West Florida enters the weekend with a 14-8 overall record and a 10-6 record in GSC play. The Argos enter this weekend on a three-game losing streak and have lost four of their last five games.
  • Rylie Stephens and Haidyn Pitsch are the top two scorers in the UWF backcourt. Stephens averages 13.5 points per game shooting 41% from the field. Pitsch also averages 13.5 points per game and leads the team with 53 assists on the season.
  • In the front court, West Florida is led by senior Bella Green. Green currently averages 10.7 points per game and pulls down 7.5 rebounds per game
