CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State Men's Basketball Team (12-11, 8-9 GSC) forced 13 second half turnovers leading to a 72-63 win against the Tigers from the University of West Alabama (10-12, 7-10 GSC) Saturday afternoon on Lloyd Clark Court in Walter Sillers Coliseum.
Delta State won the turnover battle forcing 16 turnovers while only turning the ball over four times.
Senior guard
Keithean Brooks had himself quite the afternoon for DSU as he led all scorers with 31 points, five rebounds and four steals. The Statesmen took the lead at 3-2 36 seconds into the game and never trailed for the rest of the game.
Delta State pushed out to an 8-2 start in the first two minutes of the game led by five points from Brooks.
Brooks would continue to add on to a tremendous first half scoring 15 points leading the green and white to a 27-25 halftime lead.
As the Statesmen and Tigers exchanges scores to a 36-34 DSU lead with 15:47 remaining. Delta State would go on a 28-9 run in 8:52 to pull ahead 64-43 with 6:55 remaining.
The trio of Brooks,
Chris Terrell, and
Kolby Horace were key contributors in the 28-9 run. Terrell had 20 points, three assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Horace scored 12 points with two steals while battling foul trouble early on.
The Tigers could not respond to the 28-9 run as Delta State would hold on to a 72-63 win.
Delta State will go on the road next week with a road trip to Valdosta, Ga., Thursday to take on the Blazers from Valdosta State University. The green and white will follow up Thursday's game with a trip to Pensacola, Fla., to take on the Argonauts from the University of West Florida Saturday afternoon.
