Box Score 2 MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Delta State University Softball Team (10-12, 5-9 GSC) split their double header with the Cotton Blossoms of the University of Arkansas at Monticello (12-16, 6-8 GAC) Tuesday afternoon in Alvy Early Softball Field on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
The Lady Statesmen fell in game one 5-0 but finished the double header on a high note with a 12-9 win.
GAME ONE
The Lady Statesmen had the leading run at the plate in the top of the sixth in game one down 2-0 after
Calli McConnell would advance
Mary Teague to third on a two out double to center field.
The Lady Statesmen would draw three walks in game one as
Linda Ornelas would add a stolen base as a pinch runner.
UAM added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to hold on to a 5-0 win in game one.
Emma Enderud threw five innings striking out two Blossoms in the start.
GAME TWO
The Lady Statesmen bats came alive in game two's 12-9 win against the Cotton Blossoms. Delta State had three-hit performances from
Kyleigh Wheaton and
Bailey Way as they both went 3-4 at the plate in the win. The Lady Statesmen scored nine runs in the first three innings.
Emma Collier put the Lady Statesmen on the board in the top of the first with a two-run home run to give DSU a 2-0 lead. Collier now has two home runs this season.
After the Cotton Blossoms put 2 runs on the board in the bottom of the first, Delta State would answer with a four-run top of the second started with a bases loaded walk from
Mattie Granberry as DSU would re-gain the lead 3-2.
Mary Teague would get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the next at-bat to make it 4-2. On the next at-bat, McConnell would drive in a run with an infield single making it 5-2. Collier would get her third RBI of the game in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.
In the third, Delta State added three more runs starting with a wild pitch that scored
Ally Agner making it 7-3. Granberry would add two RBIs with a infield single to make it 9-3.
After four consecutive runs from UAM, Delta State added some insurance runs in the top of the seventh starting with a solo home run from Way to make it 10-7. Two batters later,
Rylee Leonard would drive in a run with a double to left field to make it 11-7. Leonard would come around to score on a rbi single from McConnell to make it 12-7.
UAM threatened to come back in the bottom of the seventh, but Enderud would shut the door as DSU took the second game 12-9.
The Lady Statesmen hit the road this weekend as they travel to Livingston, Ala., to take on the Tigers from the University of West Alabama on Friday and Saturday. The first pitch Friday will be at 5:00 p.m. (CDT).
