CLEVELAND, Tenn. —
Je'Marion Westbrook scored a game-high 23 points on near-perfect shooting to lead the Delta State men's basketball team to a 68–64 victory over Lee on Thursday night at Walker Arena.
Westbrook shot 10 of 11 from the field and made three 3-pointers to pace the Statesmen (10–15, 7–13 Gulf South Conference), who earned a key road win behind efficient offense and clutch free throw shooting.
Bryce Clayton added 18 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double, knocking down four shots from beyond the arc and converting all four of his free throw attempts.
Dacory Porter contributed 16 points and five assists.
Lee (11–12, 8–11) held a narrow 28–27 lead at halftime after a back-and-forth opening period that featured six lead changes. Westbrook kept Delta State within striking distance, scoring 11 points in the first half, including a layup in the closing seconds to trim the deficit to one.
Delta State seized control early in the second half, using a decisive run to build its largest lead of the night at 51–41 with 10:18 remaining. The Statesmen relied heavily on their perimeter shooting, finishing 11 of 26 from 3-point range, and capitalized at the free throw line, converting 13 of 14 attempts.
Lee rallied late and cut the deficit to two points in the final seconds after a 3-pointer by Ben Ritger, but Clayton made two free throws with one second remaining to seal the win.
Phillip Hughes also added six points and four rebounds for Delta State.
Zach Gray led Lee with 11 points, while Tylon Chatman added 13 and Dayveun Anderson scored 10. Willie Walton grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Flames.
Delta State led for more than 30 minutes and overcame Lee's advantage in points in the paint by controlling the perimeter and executing in late-game situations.
The Statesmen look to keep momentum rolling as they travel to Nashville to take on the Trojans from Trevecca Nazarene University Saturday afternoon at approximately 4:00 p.m. (CT).
