Lady Statesmen look to add on to Three-Game Win Streak with a road trip to Alabama

Cleveland, Miss. - The Delta State University Lady Statesmen Women's Basketball Team (11-8, 9-5 GSC) will travel to Alabama for two conference away games this weekend.  


On Thursday, the Lady Statesmen travel to Huntsville, Alabama to face the Chargers of UAH (19-4, 14-1 GSC) at 5:30 P.M. The Lady Statesmen will then travel to Livingston, Alabama to face the Tigers of West Alabama (9-9, 7-8 GSC) at 2:00 P.M.  


The Voice of the Statesmen Michael Gross will be on the air for both games with the pregame show starting approximately 30 minutes before tipoff of each game. 

Scouting the Lady Statesmen: 

  • Delta State looks to add on to their three-game winning streak after going 2-0 last week with an 81-62 win against AUM and a 57-49 win against Montevallo.  

  • The Lady Statesmen have been extraordinarily strong on the defensive side of the ball. Entering this weekend, Delta State is the top defensive team in the conference and are only giving up an average of 58.9 points per game. 

  • Jariyah Williamson is the leading scorer entering into this weekend for Delta State. Williamson is currently averaging 10.3 points per game this season and is the team's second leading rebounder, pulling down 5.1 rebounds per game. 

  • Dakiya Toney has been holding down the front court for the green and white. The Lake Village native is averaging a team-high 6.9 rebounds per game for the Lady Statesmen. Last weekend, Toney added two double-doubles, scoring 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in Thursday's win against AUM. In Saturday's win, Toney scored a team-high 10 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in the win against Montevallo. 

  • In Thursday's win against AUM, the Lady Statesmen scored a team high 81 points. Coming off the bench, sophomore forward Alyse Holliman had a solid performance scoring 16 points and grabbing six boards in the win.  

Scouting the Chargers: 

  • UAH enters this weekend still atop the Gulf South Conference with a 19-4 overall record and a 14-1 record in conference play. Last week, the Chargers suffered their first conference loss of the season on the road against Lee 62-58. 

  • The Chargers have been on a dominant run this season as they are beating opponents by an average of 15.5 points. 

  • The Chargers are led by the top scorer in the conference in Lilli Wilken. Wilken enters this weekend leading all players in the GSC averaging 21.7 points per game.  

  • Last time out, the Chargers bounced back from their first conference loss this season with a road win against Trevecca Nazarene 65-51. In the win, Wilken recorded a double-double, scoring 25 points and 15 rebounds. 

Scouting the Tigers: 

  • The Tigers enter this weekend with a two-game losing streak looking to bounce back after a close 84-80 loss on the road at Lee last Saturday.  

  • The Tigers enter this weekend as the best team in the conference at defending the perimeter. The Tigers have held opposing teams to 27.1% shooting from beyond the arch, which leads the GSC. 

  • Bellah Machen has been the impact player in the Tigers' backcourt so far this season. The Mobile native is the team's leading scorer averaging 16.6 points per game and is has been an impact on the defensive side of the ball, leading the team with 26 steals. 

  • Haley Nichols is the team's go-to player on the front court for UWA. The UAH transfer is nearly averaging a double-double per game, scoring 13.1 points per game and pulling down 9.1 rebounds per game.
