CLEVELAND- The Lady Statesmen played 110 minutes of soccer against Lyon College Saturday morning and in end, could not break a 3-3 deadlock at the blow of the final whistle. The Lady Statesmen are now 3-2-1 on the seaosn, while the Pipers fall to 2-1.
Lyon College took an early lead just five minutes in the game on a goal by K. Smith. The Lady Statesmen, playing their second game in two days, responded quickly scoring three goals in the next 25 minutes. Erin Smith knocked in her fourth on the year to tie the game at 1-1. Twin sister Sarah Smith added her team leading sixth just four minutes later with the help of the wind. Ashley Cechovsky made it 3-1 after a good cross form Laura Swanson into the box.
Lyon College were a different team after the break outshooting the Lady Statesmen 12-1 in the second half and scoring two goals. Cethlinn Cunningham cut the lead to one with a goal in the 79th minute. Just two minutes before the final whistle, Cunningham once again found the back of the net with a goal off a corner kick to tie the game and send it into overtime at 3-3.
"We played well I thought for most of the game", head coach Jim Allen said. "The girls have played three games in five days and have shown alot of determination this last week. There is still a long way to go."
Goalkeeper Sarah Prevost made six saves in the tie.
Delta State is on the road September 16 against Union University. Kick-off is set for 5 p.m.
