TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Delta State Statesmen shot 29 percent from the field as they dropped their exhibition opener at Florida State 81-38 on Tuesday.
The Seminoles broke a 4-4 tie early in the game with a 9-2 run to establish the pace, and then used a 10-2 run in the last four minutes of the first half that gave the home team a 30-14 lead to seize control of the contest.
The Statesmen were shot 17-of-59 (28.8 percent) from the field. Baskets were particularly hard to come by in the second half, as the Seminoles held their visitors to 6-of-32 shooting (18.8 percent).
Jeremie Davis (Arcadia, La./New Orleans) led the Statesmen with 10 points and six rebounds.
Eric Spencer (Marion, Ark./UA-Fort Smith) added nine points.
Dmitry Pirshin (Moscow, Russia/Gulf Coast CC) was the team's high rebounder with seven boards.
Solomon Alabi led the Seminoles with 16 points.
The Seminoles led 42-22 at halftime and outscored the Statesmen 39-16 in the second half.
The Statesmen travel to Thibodaux, La. for their next exhibition contest Thursday at Nicholls State. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The Statesmen open the regular season Wednesday, Nov. 18 when they travel to New Orleans to face Xavier.
